When the five lights went out, Hamilton got the jump on his team-mate Bottas. Vettel tried to have a go at the Mercedes cars but it didn’t work out – and he ended up losing a place to Verstappen.

Norris and Raikkonen had bad first laps. The Brit went wide and lost a number of places. Raikkonen dropped to the tail of the field after going into the gravel at turn 4.

Struggling with a flat spot on his tyre, Vettel finally let stablemate Charles Leclerc through into turn 1 at the beginning on lap 12. The order was Hamilton, Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, Vettel and Gasly at that stage. The Haas’ and Toro Rossos followed next to complete the points scoring positions.

After Vettel kept asking his team could he pit for new tyres, they did. He boxed at the end of lap 19 and put on the medium tyre. Verstappen came in a lap later and put on softs again. That moved Leclerc up to 3rd.

Leclerc boxed on lap 26 for hard tyres, followed by the Mercedes’ on laps 27 and 28. Hamilton retained a comfortable lead over Bottas, with Verstappen, Leclerc and Vettel completing the top 5.

Once again, team orders became an issue at Ferrari as Vettel on mediums got stuck behind Leclerc on hards. Ferrari eventually got Leclerc to move out of the way as the German would be pitting again. Verstappen and Vettel pitted for a second time to elevate Leclerc to P3.

Hamilton led Bottas, Leclerc, Verstappen and Vettel before a safety car was deployed because Lando Norris and Lance Stroll came to blows at turn 2.

The Brit tried to go around the outside into T1 and failed. He then made contact with the left rear of the Racing Point and the pair ended up in the gravel and out of the race.

Leclerc pitted under SC conditions and fell to P5. Hamilton retained P1 from Bottas. Verstappen, Vettel, Leclerc, Gasly, Grosjean, Magnussen, Kvyat and Sainz completed the top 10 ahead of the restart.

Magnussen got a superb run on Grosjean when the race went green again and he made a move into T1 – but there was some wheel-to-wheel contact as he made the overtake for P7. The Dane almost got Gasly as well but the Frenchman held firm at T5.

Grosjean tried to get back ahead of his stablemate but Magnussen closed the door at turn 1. The Frenchman then came under pressure from Carlos Sainz as the pair went wheel-banging into turn 1. Again, Grosjean went off the circuit and took to the escape road.

However, Sainz got his man on the next lap to take P8 at his home race. Kvyat did the same soon after as the Frenchman dropped from P7 to P10 in the space of a few laps.

Lewis Hamilton cruised to a dominant win from Bottas and Verstappen. Vettel, Leclerc, Gasly, Magnussen, Sainz, Kvyat and Grosjean completed the points scorers in a largely uneventful race.
