It was an hot Friday in Austria, both on a climate side and on a track side. Free Practice 2 ended with a lot mistakes and a couple of important crashes, as all the teams were trying to find their best for tomorrow's qualifying session. It was Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas to lead in the first part of the FP2 in front of Charles Leclerc.
The drama started when Max Verstappen crashed out in front of Red Bull fans, as he spun in Turn 10 causing the first red flag. The Dutch performed pretty well by then in this first day at the Red Bull Ring, so he could still recover by tomorrow.
Valtteri Bottas was fastest in 1:05.417 when he caused another red flag as he lost the rear, sliding through the wall in turn 6. It was an hard impact for the Finn, as his Mercedes had an hard hit on the barrier. Bottas was taken to the medical center where he has been given the all-clear.
At the green flag, both Ferrari went on track on soft tyres to try to get the top of the leaderboard. Sebastian Vettel was in front of Leclerc with purple sectors, as he spun out to the gravel on Turn 10. The German prevented his car to hit the wall, but he didn’t manage to improve his lap times. However, the event didn’t slow down Charles Leclerc behind him, who was able to push to the fastest lap of the session, with a 1:05.086.
Will Ferrari be able to be as competitive as in Canada also on Saturday and Sunday?
