Lewis Hamilton has been penalised for impeding Kimi Raikkonen at Turn 3 during today’s qualifying session. The Briton, who clocked the second quickest laptime, will receive a 3-place drop and will therefore start the Austrian GP from P5.
As the stewards report, Hamilton was coming out of the pits and was informed of the cars approaching. Although the 5-time world champion took evasive action, it was not enough to avoid impeding Kimi Raikkonen, who was forced to abort his flying lap.
Max Verstappen will be therefore moving up to P2, making it a Mercedes-free front row next to Leclerc. Valtteri Bottas and Lando Norris also gain one position each, as the momentum continues for the 19-year-old rookie.
Hamilton opened up about his sanction on his instagram stories. “Totally deserved the penalty today -he wrote- and have no problem accepting it. Was a mistake on my behalf and I take full responsibility for it. It was not intentional. Anyway, tomorrow is another day and an opportunity to rise”.
