Zak Brown assures that he and McLaren would not block Fernando Alonso from getting a further F1 opportunity with a rival team.

Earlier this month, it was rumoured that McLaren and Alonso parted ways following their failed attempt at entering this year’s Indy 500. However, CEO Zak Brown stated that Alonso ‘remains an ambassador for McLaren’, and stressed that their relationship is still intact despite some untrustworthy rumors.

“We have got a great relationship with him and speak with him about some racing programmes in the future that are not Formula 1-related” he said.

It is clear that McLaren can no longer provide the Spaniard with a seat any time soon. Brown intends to build on the McLaren campaign he has currently established. Having confirmed both Sainz and Norris, the Woking-based team looks to lay the foundation on the new elements he recruited and organised.

“But we’re happy for him if he wants to get back into Formula 1 – because we don’t have a seat available – to go race for another team. We’d very much support him in that if that’s what he wants to do.”

“Carlos has been extremely quick every weekend and Lando is also extremely quick and a quick learner” said Brown. “He’s not making some of the mistakes, knock on wood, that you would maybe anticipate from a rookie driver. He drives quite mature, his feedback is good, he gets along with Carlos very well.”
