Scuderia Toro Rosso changed his name to welcome “Alpha Tauri”. The new Formula 1 team will have its debut in the 2020 Australian Grand Prix. Alpha Tauri will remain as the B team of the senior team called Red Bull Racing. Their new car, which is called AT01, was the one that undoubtedly surprised many of us. We were already accustomed to Toro Rosso's unique blue and red, but in the presentation, which took place on Friday, February 14th, the new car design was revealed. The AT01 is black with white and was the car that changed colours the most, although on the mechanical side, the car carries many parts of the RB15, that is, the Red Bull from last year.
The pre-season of Formula 1 has already begun and it is starting to be noticed that the middle area of the grid will be very tight. There are many teams that want to take McLaren's fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship. What are these teams? All the teams that are not part, at the moment, of the top teams (Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull). We are talking about Renault, Racing Point, Haas, Williams, Alfa Romeo and Alpha Tauri, while McLaren will try to defend its title as “the best of the rest”. Renault comes from a disappointing 2019 but its pair of drivers (Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon) seem to be one of the strongest. Racing Point has brought a lot of controversy to the paddock in this preseason, since its new RP20 has many similarities with Mercedes W10 from last year. Consequently, if the W10 was world champion, the RP20 is expected to be very fast and a threat to many. Haas, like Renault, had a very disappointing 2019, since it was full of accidents and bad results, the north Americans expect to reverse that situation and be able to achieve a better result in 2020. Williams, what can be said about them? In the entire 2019 season, the British team only managed to get 1 point, they arrived late to the preseason of that year and their car was around 3 seconds slower than the ones of their rivals. In 2020 it is seen that they have more financial resources and, therefore, they will be able to become faster and, at best, reach the other teams. Alfa Romeo had very good results with his very experienced driver Kimi Raikkonen, however, Antonio Giovinazzi did not have a very good season as a rookie, so they were not seen in the fight for fourth place. Finally, Toro Rosso got two podiums, one achieved in Germany by Daniil Kvyat (P3) and the other in Brazil by Pierre Gasly (P2). It was a very good season for the Italians; however, their good results were not constant, so they stayed behind the fight for being the best of the rest.
With all that said, Helmut Marko, Red Bull's chief advisor, commented in an interview with the “AutoBild” media, that he sees Alpha Tauri near Racing Point and, from what we have seen in pre-season times, Racing Point is running very fast and has marked times that are very close to those of Ferrari, a team that belongs to the group of the three top teams.
“Our second team, Alpha Tauri, is in good shape. This shows the great work our Honda partners did when there were no races. They have improved the power unit in every way. Now it is more powerful, uses less fuel and has even become more reliable.” The Red Bull advisor commented.
Marko emphasized the increase of reliability of the Japanese power unit. The big problem that Honda has had in its engines has always been the power and reliability they can have. They had a lot of problems with McLaren when they supplied them power units, but apparently, they have already solved it. Where will Alpha Tauri end up in his debut season? Who will take the title of "best of the rest"? The season will begin on March 15th at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Australia and on that date, the real results of the teams will begin to be seen.
