This season resembles an even more ghost one. The Coronavirus pandemic is setting each plan on fire.
First, Formula 1 organization and the FIA tried to race in Melbourne, then they cancelled and postponed a big amount of Grands Prix. The final decision was to go for a winter season.
Chase Carey, alongside with the FIA said that the 2020 should go on but with some arrangements to be done.
The factories should anticipate their shutdown, originally planned for the summer break, in the two weeks between March and April in order to eliminate the spread of the virus.
It is not enough. At this point, the teams should be almost ready to re-open their gates and the situation has not improved that much.
“We get the chance to extend our “summer” shutdown - explains Alfa Romeo's boss Frederic Vasseur – This decision could help us reducing the costs”
In fact, the lack of races is building an extraordinarily expensive season for Formula 1. The teams have already paid for their new cars and had no chance to test them. They still have to pay their employees’ salaries and they cannot earn anything from the Championship at the moment.
There is something at the moment that is more valuable, at the moment, though, and that is health. In fact, the risks of contracting the virus are really high, as we have already seen in Melbourne, with the McLaren racing team stuck in Australia for two weeks. The worst part is that the situation is not improving at all.
“We are waiting day by day for the situation to improve. We have everyday a new concern, a new problem. The situation is still serious and the 21 days of the planned summer shutdown are over”- Vasseur says.
The Coronavirus is making us patient but the situation in the factories cannot stay frozen forever. Let’s just hope that Spring could help them bloom as well, bringing some warmth to kill the virus.
