Formula 1 teams and drivers are already preparing themselves for the return of the top motorsport category. With already the first 8 races confirmed by the FIA, Formula 1 will return to the tracks, specifically the Red Bull Ring, on July 4th for the first Austrian Grand Prix, this country will host two races, the second will take place a week later, that is, on July 12. As we have already seen, the drivers have said that it will be a rather difficult restart since, if the season had started normally in the Australian Grand Prix, the drivers would already have the feeling of their cars thanks to the preseason tests which took place two weeks before the GP in Melbourne. Instead, this time, the drivers have a long time without having driven their cars. However, some teams have already gone ahead and have scheduled tests with old cars so that their drivers can get used to it again. It is worth mentioning that today, Mercedes used its W09 at Silverstone with Valtteri Bottas at the wheel. This type of tests has no limit on kilometres since they are old cars, so it would not alter the current car. In this article we will talk about a particular team and its reasons why they will not be able to carry out their respective tests with their drivers.
McLaren had a great 2019 season and they are expected to be at the level to continue competing for fourth place in the constructors' championship. Their pair of drivers, which consists of Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz, is one of the strongest on the grid and, despite the fact that Sainz will leave the British team after being signed by Ferrari, Daniel Ricciardo will arrive to give more balance to the team since the Australian is a very experienced driver who knows the key to win races. Many people estimate that McLaren will end up being the best of the rest for the second consecutive year, however, they have a small disadvantage which is that they will not be able to test before the first date of the 2020 Formula 1 season. Why? Here we explain it to you.
It turns out that McLaren team boss, Andreas Seidl, has commented that they do not own a car that is 2 years older than the current car that can be used for testing due to changes in the power unit sector. Another possible problem that was presented to them was that, at this moment, the team is getting ready for the change of power unit of its current supplier, Renault, to which they will change in the next season, Mercedes.
“Unfortunately, we do not have this possibility of having a car that it two years old and we could operate, because of all the powertrain switches we had here in recent years. But as you have already, Lando was doing some karting and F3 testing. We’re looking into the second thing also now with Carlos to have the drivers ready, and also we will do some simulator work with them.” McLaren team principal, Andreas Seidl, said in an interview with Sky Sports F1.
Recall that last week, Lando was racing with a Euroformula car at Silverstone with his former junior team Carlin. This was his first time on the track after the preseason tests that took place in February of this year.
"We are preparing the cars at the moment. We are trying to go through the procedures and processes in the garage for these new circumstances with all the social distancing. I am happy with the steps we are taking here as a team. I think with what we know now, the process that has been outlined by the FIA and F1 in terms of how we will actually execute the race weekend in Austria. We're also clear there, and it's about focusing on preparing for the next few weeks, and we look forward to a good start in Austria.” Seidl expressed.
It is hoped that this is not a tough start for the drivers and that they can get used to their cars as soon as possible. It will be a very hectic and busy few months since the races will be held very often so that the largest number of Grand Prixs fit on the calendar, so the teams and drivers will have to be 100% concentrated and organized.
