Next weekend, the Eifel Grand Prix will take place on the famous Nurburging circuit. We are used to watch the Grand Prix with some support categories, just like Formula 2, Formula 3, Porsche Super Cup, W Series (starting next year), among others. Well, on this occasion, there will be none of these categories since Formula 2 will have its next date until Bahrain and Formula 3 concluded its season at Mugello. It should be noted that, after the circuit opened its new layout, a race was held in 1984 with 10 world champions of the highest category of motorsport in which all the drivers raced with Mercedes 190E cars. Ayrton Senna, who was a Formula 3 driver, won the race, giving his name to notice in many teams, this race was 3 weeks before his first podium at the Monaco GP. This was the last time drivers competed in equal cars, Sebastian Vettel has commented that it would not be a bad idea to do so.

“That would be fun, I would be up for it. If we had a chance in touring cars or something, where we could race each other hard, I don't know if that would maybe jeopardise the show of the Formula 1 race following after that too much." The German driver commented.

"This was a long time ago, but nowadays, we are doing a lot of Formula 1 races, and it would be nice to do other races in other cars as well." The Ferrari driver affirmed. "Back then there was a lot more change in terms of drivers driving Formula 1, Formula 2, anything really, week in, week out."

“Now, obviously, the level is really, really high, and you are concentrating on one thing. I think for us drivers it would be fun to have the ability to mix and match other cars and other categories as well. I can see that then it would take something off their focus, and then they would start a whole package of arguments and excuses. I guess those days are gone."

It is worth noting that if the drivers compete in equal cars, there would be no technical or mechanical advantage, only the skill of the driver behind the wheel would be highlighted. There would be drivers who would not want to do this type of racing, but there are many others who do. For example, what would Lewis Hamilton look like if he lost this race? Many people, especially the press, would comment that the only reason he won his titles was because of the car, but maybe he just had a bad race. On the other hand, what would happen if George Russell or Nicholas Latifi win the race? Teams would be more interested in them because they know they are capable of defeating more experienced drivers, so these races are a double-edged sword for drivers. Carlos Sainz, McLaren driver, is also willing to race in the same cars, as long as they are Formula 1 cars.

“I want to compete in almost the same conditions as them in a Formula 1 car. I don't care about anything else. As a driver, you always want to see where you are in the fastest car in the world, and that is a Formula 1 car. " The Madrid driver said in an interview for motorsport.com.

“In the end, Formula 2, Formula 3, WRC, or anything else, is different from what we are professionals. We are professional Formula 1 drivers and we are experts in driving these cars. So what I would like to compare with the other 19 drivers in the same Formula 1 car and see who can adapt the fastest and see who is the fastest.” Commented the McLaren driver, soon from Ferrari.

As we already mentioned, this type of racing would be something extremely interesting to see as a fan, however, it is most likely that many drivers do not want to participate, as well as the teams, because if their drivers have bad results, they too will be affected. Formula 1 would not benefit entirely either since it could be labelled as the category in which the car matters more than the talent of the driver. Would you like to see these types of races take place?
