Lance Stroll revealed he tested positive for Covid-19 after he flew home during the Eifel GP weekend. However, the Canadian assures he is fit to race at Portimao.

Racing Point driver Lance Stroll was forced to sit out of the race weekend at Nurburgring, as he started feeling unwell on Saturday morning. He was promptly replaced by Nico Hulkenberg, who has already undertaken driving duties for the British team this season.

Team boss Otmar Szafnauer reiterated that the driver had not been feeling well since Russia and had displayed mild flu symptoms, but the situation was always closely monitored.

Stroll explained on social media that his tests came back negative prior to the Eifel GP, but the results were different after he flew back. Nearly two weeks have passed and, following a negative test on Monday, the 22-year-old is now eagerly awaiting the Portuguese GP to be back in the cockpit.

“I just want to let everyone know that I recently tested positive for Covid-19 after the Eifel GP weekend” reads his social media post. “I am feeling 100% and have since tested negative.

“To fill you on what happened, I arrived at the Nurburgring after testing negative in the normal pre-race tests.

“On Saturday morning I started to feel unwell and woke up with an upset stomach. I followed the FIA protocol and self-isolated in my motorhome and did not re-enter the paddock.

“I wasn’t fit to race so I flew home early Sunday morning. As I was still feeling under the weather I took a Covid test on Sunday morning.

“The next day the results came back positive, so I stayed at home self-isolating the for the next 10 days. Luckily, my symptoms were pretty mild.

“I was tested again on Monday this weekend and my results were negative. I feel in great shape and I can’t wait to be back with the team and to race in Portugal.”
