After changing their name from Scuderia Toro Rosso to Alpha Tauri, the Italian team managed to achieve their first victory in their very first season. Even though it was an extremely strong season for them, Alpha Tauri was able to achieve a P7 in the constructors’ championship with a total of 107 points, since the midfield battle was very tough. Once the 2020 Formula 1 season is over, now is when the official results have already come to light and at MotorLat we have prepared an article to compare two drivers that have been part of the Red Bull family for a long time, we are talking about Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat, we will take into account their qualifying performances and final race positions in a head-to-head battle.
The level of the car was surprisingly good, they managed to score a total of 107 points but they were the team which scored the least amount of points of the midfield since Alfa Romeo was the next team behind them but they only scored 8 points, quite a difference, isn’t it?
In the qualifying session, Pierre Gasly strongly outscored his teammate. The French driver earned his pass to Q3 a total of 11 times, while the Russian advanced only 4 times. Gasly got a better qualifying position 13 times, while Ocon could only beat him on 4 occasions. We have taken the time to calculate the average difference the two Alpha Tauri drivers have in each qualifying session by comparing their lap times. With these data we can conclude that Pierre Gasly is, on average, 0.848 seconds faster than Daniil Kvyat. The best position the Frenchman driver managed to obtain in the qualifying sessions was fourth (4th) place in one race (during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix), Kvyat's best position was sixth (6th) place, also achieved on a single occasion (Sakhir Grand Prix). Now, on average, the position that Pierre Gasly gets in each qualifying session was 10.1, that is and rounded, 10th place, while the Russian driver obtained an average position of 12.1, that is, 12th place. We attach a chart so that the understanding of this information is better.
|Grand Prix||Gasly's Time Lap||Gasly's Position||Kvyat's Position||Kvyat's Time Lap||Difference from Gasly to Kvyat|
|Average Qualifying Position||10th (10.1)||12th (12.1)|
|Average Difference from Gasly to Kvyat||-0.848|
The race is where the points are given, so the result in this session will determine your position in the drivers’ and constructors’ championship. To begin with, Gasly had three retirements (Hungarian, Toscan and Imola Grand Prix), either due to accidents or mechanical incidents, while Kvyat suffered 2 of these (Austrian and British Grand Prix). Pierre Gasly achieved his first ever Formula 1 victory during the Italian Grand Prix but this was the only podium the team obtained. The best position in which Gasly finished was 1st achieved once (Italian Grand Prix), while Kvyat's best position was 4th only once (Imola Grand Prix). Pierre Gasly's average race podium was 8.2, that is, 8th place, while Daniil Kvyat's was 10.5, that is, 11th place. Finally, the French driver finished the season in P10 with a total of 75 units (tied with Racing Point’s Lance Stroll), while the Russian driver finished in P14 with 32 points (a difference of 43 points). We attach the chart to improve the understanding.
|Grand Prix||Pierre Gasly's Position||Daniil Kvyat's Position|
|Average Final Position||8th (8.2)||11th (10.5)|
|Points||75 (P10)||32 (P14)|
