During the pre-season testing Mick Schumacher appeared on the scoreboard as ‘MSC’, his father Michael’s famous abbreviation.

The seven-time world champion used it to differentiate from his brother Ralf, back in the day and Mick has asked Formula 1 to adopt it as well.

The 21 year old has been racing as ‘SCH’ for the past few years, but now he wants to change it as an homage to his father.

“I wanted that MSC,” he explained. “I think it is an emotional bond I have to it.”

Surely it will have quite an emotional impact on everyone else too.

“Obviously I think is quite nice for everybody watching the timing screens and seeing MSC back on the screens as well.”

Mick Schumacher is eager for the season to start, as he is “very ready” for his first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix next weekend.

“We have 23 races coming up this season, which is great,” he said.

Last week he got to drive the VF21 during an unusually short pre-season testing, only three days out on track, with a hydraulics issue that allowed him to complete only 15 laps on the first day.

“In general, I’d say we’re happy with how the test has gone.”

The German young talent won the European F3 in 2018 with Prema, then moved to F2 with the same team and won the championship in his second year in the category. He has also been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since the start of 2019. In the season that is about to begin Schumacher will be driving for Haas.

“I’m very impatient to get going with the season now and I’m very much looking forward to it. It can’t come soon enough. I feel prepared and I’m very ready.”
