MotorLat attended an exclusive media session with McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl.
When Seidl was asked about his stance in the opening lap between the incident of Scuderia Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris being run off the track and the issue of Sainz having to give the place back to Norris; the Spanish driver did so in a clever way which is not considered the correct structure and if the FIA should be stricter as it is shown that it is an unfair advantage.
Seidl comments, "First of all with the incident, between Carlos and Lando, it was pretty clear that he needs the place back he got ran off the track. So, that’s why we expected that he give the position back.
He continues, "But, unfortunately he [Sainz] did it in a clever way, so that he could actually overtake Lando in the next straight that benefits them in the end. With Lando making up positions in that lap was pretty much done."
He adds, "It was not an easy race for him, he [Lando] struggled a lot with the condition of the track and the tyres."
He concludes, "In the end, we should be happy as we were able to jump on Ferrari.”
Over the course of this weekend, although it was evident that the Ferrari's were the much faster car, McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo was able to keep Carlos Sainz behind him.
Seidl remarks, "As I said before, we need to be absolutely happy with the outcome with today’s race. Because we have maximized everything that is possible, and even more today. We managed to finish ahead of one of the Ferrari's. The Ferrari’s are getting much quicker every weekend which is expected, so it’s fair to say that they were quicker than us this weekend. That’s a good achievement for both our drivers today to keep one Ferrari behind us in the race."
