Despite driving a car that is comfortably the slowest on the grid in 2021, rookie Mick Schumacher has impressed throughout the season and has consistently outperformed teammate Nikita Mazepin.

Asked about his strong performances over the last few races, Schumacher is really happy with the steps forward the team has taken and admits they were upset not to make Q2 at COTA after their surprise appearance in the middle segment of qualifying at Istanbul Park.

''We're doing big steps forward and I think this weekend we were really upset that we didn't manage to go to Q2 because we had the chance; that would have been twice in a row,'' he said.

''Overall I think we're really happy with our performance and progression.''

Schumacher came into focus in the closing laps at COTA last weekend as he was a lapped car in front of the tense fight for the win between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

The 22-year-old was aware of the battle and didn’t want to hinder, but added he needs to focus on his own race, too.

''I was aware of Max being there and Lewis obviously close behind,'' he said.

''I think in that situation, he got my DRS and I think therefore the whole situation equalled out a little bit.

''Of course... I knew, but I mean especially in that last sector and I can't disappear.

''My car is on track and I'm racing my race. I tried to do my best to not be hindering... but still I have to focus on my race and keeping the car on track.''

The 2020 Formula 2 champion is also a fan of the abrasive surface at COTA and the challenge of looking after the tyres.

''I loved it. Every track should be like it,'' he said.

''It has character and I think that’s what we need and that’s what we want.''
