Before the last event of the season, Zak Brown was present in a press conference in which MotorLat was present. The McLaren boss talked a lot about the new projects that could take place for the Woking-based team in the next years. He also analysed with us media the possibility to raise the budget cap.

We asked him which will be McLaren’s focus in 2022 both in F1 and in other categories.

“This year we wanted to fill the gap with the front teams, and we did that. We want to be able to end in Q1 more often next year but there is a proper preparation that needs to be done before we get to that. I think we did that pretty well in both categories but there are some valuations to be done.

“Commercially, it has to make sense, for us, we want to be comfortable where we are at: Formula 1, Indycar, Extreme E Team. We just had a two-day test in Extreme E, we are working to have a third car in Indycar series in 2023”  -
he continued – But before that, I think we have to be in Q1 before we take a final decision.”

Let’s analyse together the implications of the budget cap. The main teams are trying so hard to increase that. Brown is against this decision, as he revealed that as this rule was originally to be set this year, the FIA gave them a technical revenue and the car damages very few. This implies that the budget cap is sufficient.

“Certainly, you could have a revenue for maximum expense. This is motor racing and this means that everybody will come through the same challenges. In reality, there has been very little damage in the last year and this was proposed to us a year ago. They did a report on the damage that were reported on the car. This little damage brings that some teams will try to raise the budget.”

“Imagine what happens in summer break, with the first damages during the opening laps – he said - Then, there will be sprint races. I think it’s going to be new for some teams to manage the budget. I think the revenue grows over time and there is the need to work very hard to be fiscally sustainable. Even if some teams will try to raise the budget we should try and resist that.”
