Mike Krack is hopeful that Aston Martin can retain the services of Sebastian Vettel for 2023 and beyond after the German finally got the Silverstone based team off the board with points in last weekend’s Emilia Romanga Grand Prix.

Amidst intense rumours about his and the team’s future, Vettel shined in the tricky conditions at Imola as he and the team secured their first points of the season with eighth at the checkered flag.

With silly season already moving into gear, Krack, when speaking to MotorLAT and other selected media after the race, called on his team to give the four-time World champion a car that was good enough for him to not only fight with but also what was good enough to keep him at the team from 2023 and beyond.

“About Sebastian, the comments that he made or were made, I don’t know if he made them, I think they are fair; I think a driver like Sebastian should not be driving for P15 or P16. I think after this weekend, he maybe gets a little bit more passion and joy (in his driving), but we need to give him a proper car to be able to do what his level is. So we’ll work hard and try to convince him.”

“For us, it is very important (to keep Sebastian), first of all, because of the continuity I think it is very important and as I’ve said before, the work ethic, the speed, the experience if you have someone like him in the team it is of great added value, he has a lot of ideas, and he is pushing hard.”

The Luxembourgian who took on the role of team principal at Aston Martin after the departure of Otmar Szafnauer to Alpine over the winter praised Vettel’s patience and understanding of the team’s predicament, something which Krack says doesn’t happen with some other drivers who have previously raced for one of F1’s bigger teams.

“He is realistic about what we can do at the moment, so all in all, it’s very good because you have other drivers who have driven on a higher level who become very un-patient and become very difficult to manage, that is not the case with Sebastian. This is super helpful for us, and this is why we want to keep him as well as him being super fast.”
