Mercedes today displayed a reasonable performance, especially with Lewis Hamilton, who managed to conquer an important fourth position in view of tomorrow’s race - only behind Charles Leclerc and the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Perez.
Immediately after qualifying, Hamilton explained how he is happy with the performance, even though he is aware that the teams up front are much stronger than the silver arrows.
“I’m really happy actually, I mean of course I want to be in the front, but realistically we are nowhere here.
“They [Ferrari and Red Bull] are in a different class, the cars are just not even comparable, so I’m really happy with what we’ve achieved and with my laps, even givern that I missed practice 1,” the Englishman said.
Then he commented on tomorrow’s race and on how the team has worked on the car, revealing that this time they didn’t bring many updates, actually only some small ones, and that his Mercedes wouldn’t be able to fight with the “top teams”, as they are “in another league in terms of performance”.
“I thin they’re too fast to be honest, but I’m hoping somehow I can fight with maybe Perez, but well’see.
“We didn’t bring many updates here, just some very small thing that didn’t made much difference. For some reason, it is a long circuit andthis weekend we’re so far away than before, so we need to understand if we’ve taken a step forward or a step back, it’s difficult to know" he said to the media after qualifying.
“It seems that we are lacking top speed, we’ve got too much drag maybe, but then they [Red Bull and Ferrari] have more downforce in the corners, they’re faster through all the last sectors, through all those corners.
"It is strange, ‘cause in other places like Silverstone, we were there, so it’s difficult to explain, maybe they’ve taken a big step forward. They’re in a different league in terms of performance, but still I can get a good start and hopefully I can battle tomorrow".
