Up to now this weekend of the French GP has been a continuous battle between the title contenders, Red Bull and Ferrari, and today the Italian team got the better of it, taking pole position with Charles Leclerc, also thanks to a good job of team with Carlos Sainz.

Verstappen finished second, ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez, three tenths of a second behind the Ferrari driver.

“Overall I think we were lacking a bit in qualifying, just general grip” – he said right after qualy – “It was a bit trickier than what I thought, but I think that we still have a decent race car and of course hopefully tomorrow will come to our favor”.

“We are quick on the straights and we can use that tomorrow”.

Verstappen said he was not particularly disappointed or worried, work is still to be done and the most important day of the weekend will be tomorrow.

“As we were struggling a bit in qualifying I’m not particularly disappointed. Quali is done know, there’s nothing we can change about that.

“Of course the slipstream helps around here, but I don’t think it was three tenths, but you know naturally I would’ve been closer which is always nice to see, but I do think tomorrow could be quite interesting” the Dutchman said referring to Ferrari’s strategy.
Then he added: "I think it was a smart thing to do and probably if one of us had to start in the back, something similar can happen as well.”

We have a lot of top speed, of course in the race you can’t attack the high speed corners like you do in a qualifying lap, so I hope that all comes a bit more towards us. But, again, it’s going to be warmer tomorrow and we really have to lokk after our tyres".

When asked about his rivalry with Charles Leclerc he answered: “I’ve been doing this racing, especially againts Charles for a long time, so to be able to do it in Formula 1 again, after all the years we’ve raced together it’s pretty cool”.
