It's Bottas-Sainz-Leclerc as FP3 is halted by downpour

No significant indication was given by a soggy third practice where most teams stayed put on their garage to save tyre sets for the upcoming sessions.

The French weekend’s final practice session took place on a mysteriously cloudy noon, with rain threats hovering around Circuit Paul Ricard. Drops were immediately reported by Ricciardo and Räikkönen on their opening outlap, so the field hurried to set slick-tyre references. Bottas’ opener was completed in 1min, 33.66 seconds, while Vettel and Verstappen were dealing with offs on the slippery surface, especially at the Mistral's chicane.

The intensified rain eventually forced the whole field to back off into the garage, basically to avoid running out of wet-tyre sets should qualifying and the race be rainy as predicted.

And… that was a wrap for FP3! Or wasn’t it? Alonso, Sirotkin and Stroll headed out 10 minutes to the checkered flag to sample the track conditions, followed by Leclerc, Vandoorne and the Toro Rosso pair later on, but just for a brief series of sighting laps.

The only conclusion we can take is that qualifying is very likely to be run under rain as well, but the track will need to dry up at least partially to allow the following session to take place, and avoid a lamentable repeat of last year’s Monza qualifying, continuously affected by small delays until very late in the afternoon. And who will take advantage of those possible wet conditions? Who will thrive on a soggy track? Red Bull could be the best gainers.
