Johann Zarco topped the timesheets on the opening day of the Catalan Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The morning kicked off with the FP1 session, where the lead time was changing constantly as riders started to get the feel for the revamped circuit.

It was Aleix Espargaro who set the fastest time on a set of medium tyres at the end of the session, he was closely followed by Franco Morbidelli - just +0.024 seconds behind the Aprilia man. Pol Espargaro joined his brother in the top three spots at the end of the session on the Honda.

Heading into the afternoon session, the track temperature was on the rise and the names at the top of the timesheet changed from this morning. All the riders were looking for a top 10 finish for Friday - to make their day a bit easier tomorrow.

Fast times were flying in at the end of the session but it was Zarco on the Pramac Ducati who took top spot at the end of the first day with a 1:39.235. Morbidelli continued his quick pace from this morning - finishing the day in second place.

Championship leader Fabio Quartararo is still looking strong on his Yamaha machine and finished the session in third place with Brad Binder putting in a fantastic lap on the KTM to finish Friday in fourth place.

Pecco Bagnaia finished the session in fifth place with Maverick Vinales in sixth and Jack Miller in seventh place.

Enea Bastianini had a good run at the end of the practice session and finished the day in eighth place followed by the two Espargaro brothers with Aleix just ahead and Pol sneaking into the top 10.

Takaaki Nakagami just missed out on a Friday top 10 finish just behind Pol Espargaro. Marc Marquez also missed out in 15th place.

Miguel Oliveira finished in 14th with reigning world champion Joan Mir in 16th place - missing out on the top 10 as well.

FP3 will get underway at 09:55 local track time - who will improve their time to make it into the automatic Q2 spots.
