After a weekend to forget in Belgium, another tricky race is ahead for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman will start from the back of the grid and will have to face a difficult track for Red Bull Racing. Anyway, weather conditions could be a key factor in Monza for the Milton Keynes-based team, as rain could be helpful for Verstappen to make his way through the field.
After his fifth place in Free Practice 2 with a best lap of 1:21.350, Verstappen stated: “It was a good day. Of course, the conditions were a bit tricky out there, but the car was working really well and we seem quite competitive on a track that doesn’t normally suit us. Around Monza, the real lap time is hard to see because of the tow but my fastest lap was done on my own and it felt good.”
He also spoke about the new Honda engine spec he will run for the first time at the Italian Grand Prix: “I definitely think this new engine is a good step forward and you can feel the extra power which is positive. We know we won’t battle in qualifying as we will start at the back but looking at the long runs the pace was good and the car felt really nice to drive in all conditions which is always a big bonus.”
We had a good Friday. The handling and balance of the car was quite well, the power unit worked smooth and our long run pace was really good. All positives for Sunday’s race 💪 #KeepPushing #ItalianGP 🇮🇹 pic.twitter.com/7hwzZw43bu— Max Verstappen (@Max33Verstappen) September 6, 2019
Regarding the mixed conditions, he would clearly pick the rain as preferred : “I would probably choose rain for Sunday starting at the back, as we will have a better chance of coming through the field, but even in the dry we can still be competitive and we will try to make a fun race out of it.”
